SAAB-2000 ERIEYE AEW&C

(2009 till date)

The Saab 2000 is a truboprop airplane, able to cruise at a speed of over 665 km/h (360 kt) nearly approaching the speeds of jet aircraft.

In June 2006, Pakistan finalized the purchase of six Saab 2000 turboprop aircraft to be equipped with the Saab-Ericsson ERIEYE Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) system under the code name “Project Horizon”. Aircraft numbers were revised in May 2007 due to renegotiation with the Government of Pakistan, only five aircraft will be delivered, four of which will be equipped with the Erieye system, and one will be used to train SAAB-2000 air crews / as a VIP transport. On April 3, 2008, the first Saab 2000 Erieye AEW&C was rolled out and presented to Pakistan Air Force officials during a ceremony in Sweden.

The ERIEYE radar system is an AEW&C SYSTEM developed by SAAB Microwave Systems (formerly Ericsson Microwave Systems) of Sweden. It is based on the Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA). The radar provides 300 degree coverage and has an instrumental range of 450km and detection range of 350 km in a dense hostile electronic warfare environment; in heavy radar clutter and at low target altitudes. In addition to this, the radar is also capable of identifying friends or foes (IFF), and has a sea surveillance mode.
